Azti research confirms that feeding coffee grounds reduces bovine methane emissions by 20%.
Every household in Spain consumes 83.3 kilos of coffee a year. In Alava, the coffee tradition is chewed at street level, with established brands in Vitoria as a reference point for the public’s favourite infusion. Now, Alava’s livestock could be added to this diet. In a region where the primary sector contributes more than 2% of GDP, the Azti technology centre has completed a research project that has shown that cows can incorporate coffee grounds into their diet because it reduces methane emissions and even contributes benefits to their diet.
